Beware of American Language Services (ALS)
, I managed to avoid working with this outsourcer. I declined their job after getting rude and unprofessional e-mails from Gaia’s boss, Alan Weiss and reading comments from other translators who did not get paid in Proz, other translation websites and Internet reviews.
They wanted me to work on a 25 page scanned Malay Legal document and have it completed within 2 working days, which was not feasible.
They were not willing to pay for any rush fees and were unwilling to negotiate the deadline with me.
Another red flag about this outsourcer was they insisted that their payment policy was 30 days; however, other translators were complaining that they were paid after 60 days instead of 30 days, that payments were often late, and some were only partially paid.
I did not want to work for someone who disrespects their translators by name-calling, insults and goading potentially new resources with insults (see e-mails below), which is grade school mentality.
I tried warning other translators about this outsourcer by posting about them in Proz forum however Proz had strict policies in publishing postings that defame outsourcers and "hid" or deleted my postings.
I would like to share my story with other freelance translators and warn them of this outsourcer.
Here are the responses received from their "Vice President of Sales".
Hi,
I am Gaia’s boss. I found out what happened with the project that was due today. How dare you put us in this terrible position with our client.
You are totally unprofessional and a moron. Your response to Gaia just now is so stupid it is embarrassing.
I do not know what your problem is. Never contact us again for anything. I suggest you find another line of work.

Here is my response:
I have never worked with your company.
I have never agreed to accept any project you offered (in writing or in kind).
You were not interested in negotiating work terms.
Other translators have complained about your management and payment history in ProZ.
Perhaps you should plan your resources better.

You are really delusional, we sent you a PO, you did agree and then backed out leaving us no time to handle this for our client.

Here is my response:
You need to get your facts straight.
You are putting words in my mouth.
I never agreed to the PO, the price or the timeline. I never signed your W9 or your PO.
BTW: Name-calling is not very professional in the business world
