I am passionate about translating from Bengali to English. I have earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Language from the highly esteemed Lady Brabourne College of Kolkata. My second language in school was Bengali. I often won prizes in Bengali at school. I attribute that to my mother who devotedly taught me the subject and my excellent school teachers. They made me love the Bengali language and its literature, look beyond grades and prizes. Some of the most memorable moments of my childhood are of my school’s language classes. I’m still in touch with my Bengali teacher as she has transformed my life. Some shallow snobbish girls in school believed that this prize was of no value. They bullied me, “Is all you can do is win the Bengali prize?” They would try hard not to speak Bengali, think that English was superior to it. I also often won prizes in Bengali elocution and dramatics. I was an NRI child. Unlike certain Bengali NRI families where kids don’t speak Bengali at home, my parents made sure that I was fluent in the language. Books to teach me to read and write Bengali were bought. My mother would tell me children’s stories by Bengali authors at bedtime. On returning to India, I loved Bengali and English classes equally. I live in Maharashtra. Much of my heart and soul dwells in the undivided Bengal. My ancestral roots lie in Bangladesh. I want to translate my mother tongue to English so that our knowledge, literature and culture may be promoted globally. I’ll do my role to help people to widen their perception about Bengal from, “Bongs love rosogolla and macher jhol. They all originate from Kolkata.”
