We're looking for a NATIVE English speaker to work on an interesting Russian-to-English project. It's a book in the genre of magical realism (likes of G.G. Marquez, J. Cortazar, etc.).
Total size is 89k+ words. However, out of them 3,800 words are translated, so you'll need to edit them and translate the rest. You'll be expected to do editing of your own work to the presentable and ready-to-publish standard and as per author's feedback.
I.e. you should be able to take care of style, flow, & cadence, as well as grammar & orthography (spelling, punctuation), checking of quotes & other references.
Payment is negotiable. The remuneration might not be the most competing, but the experience and referencability will definitely serve you well in the future.
The deadline is flexible, so you can expect to have up to 20 weeks at your disposal, depending on your rate and experience.
Some of the criteria for translators:
- No agencies or intermediaries
- You have to be a native English speaker
- No Russian natives or bilinguals please (those born in Russia/post-USSR, but studied abroad)

We expect to offer the first job in December. It will be the translation, editing and proofreading of a document from Russian to English (British variant) with over 20,000 words. Subject – agriculture.
For this project we select the linguists on the basis of reference letters/feedback from their clients or using a small sample of the text from the project as a test.
We accept only the reference letters signed by clients or the feedback from confirmed clients on the websites such as Proz or LinkedIn.
Requirements for all language pairs:
- Advanced degree (preferably language-related) is a must
- At least 3 years’ experience in translation or editing of the texts in one or more areas of expertise listed on our website under Expertise section (for the current project we are looking for the translators with the experience in translations for agriculture sector)
- Knowledge of translation and localisation tools (Trados, Transit) or interest in learning them

TASK:
Russian-English translation adapted for the American audience.
OBJECTIVES:
-An accurate high-quality translation without mistakes in grammar, syntax or punctuation.
- You are to adapt the text for the American audience (rephrasing or omitting the sentences/words without distorting the meaning of the text where there are differences in American and Russian cultural/regional/economical or other concepts. The structure of the text must not be changed)
-Final text version must be ADEQUATE and go in accordance with the rules and norms of the English language (US).
-All translations are to be done in time. Disruption of deadlines is unacceptable.
The translation should look like an original English text.
Example:
1) Original: Повышение продаж через Яндекс-директ на 200%, автоматически сайт вывелся в поисковике на 1ю страницу.
Translation: Increase your sales by 200% using Google AdWords. Your website automatically will appear on the first page in the online search.
2) Original: Взять у поставщика прайс,ссылаясь на прайс,получить цены ниже у другого пост-ка.Повторять много раз.
Translation: Providing your suppliers with their opposition's price points promotes a healthy level of competitive pricing
3) Original: Расклейка объявлений студентами. час работы студента - 100 рублей.
Translation: Hire students as bill posters. An hour of student’s work – $7

По нашему опыту, на самом деле, труднее всего учить бизнесу людей с экономическим образованием. Т.к. переучивать всегда труднее. К примеру, в настольный тенис не берут дворовых чемпионов т.к. у них уже сформировались определенные стеротипы и берут тех которые еще никогда в руки ракетку не брали. Таким образом, ученику намного легче правильно поставить руку и научить правильно бить. В случае с дворовыми чемпионами, их нужно переучивать. И это всегда очень тяжело.
