Jesus Himself says unmistakably that divorce is inconceivable. After the marital vows “they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate” (Mt. 19:6).

Commenting on Pope Francis’ recently released apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, Cardinal Gerhard Muller, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, unambiguously confirmed that divorced persons living in a new union dwell in serious sin and may not receive Holy Communion. If anyone teaches that there is such a possibility, and baselessly supports this claim with the Amoris Laetitia exhortation, advocates a perspective that is not in accordance with Church teaching. No one can change God’s law, which states that a valid marriage is indissoluble. According to God’s ordinance, sexual relations should be a sign of sacramental marriage. Every sexual act outside of the sacrament of matrimony is a sin. Card. Muller asserts that one cannot say “yes” to Jesus, receiving Him in Holy Communion, and at the same time reject His teaching about the indissolubility of marriage. The Cardinal said that this is a contradiction, since one cannot live in a state of grace and at the same time be in a state of sin. If someone remains in a state of mortal sin, he or she must first go to confession, and can then receive Holy Communion only after receiving absolution. Divorced persons can only receive Holy Communion if they are living in a state of purity, or if they separate from the illicit partner. If this isn’t possible, then they must renounce sexual relations with each other. There can be no justification of a life in sin, and so any such situation is in opposition to God’s law.

Dear Married Couples! Never forget that in the sacrament of matrimony Jesus united you to each other in indissoluble bonds of unity. This same Jesus unequivocally says that divorce is not legitimate. After the marriage vows have been taken “they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate” (Mt. 19:6). Every thought and suggestion of divorce comes from the father of lies, that is to say, Satan. Offer up all your crises, problems, and joys to Jesus in daily prayer. Pray the rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy daily, along with daily reading of the Holy Scripture. Only with Jesus, with Mary, and with St. Joseph will you overcome your difficulties! If spouses pray together, go to confession regularly, and take part in the Eucharist, they build their future on the indestructible rock which is God Himself. The Lord Jesus invites you to the movement of Pure Hearts in Marriage if you wish to learn to love each other, and renew and heal your marital relationship. In order to join the MPHM you first have to confess all your sins in the sacrament of confession, and after receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, pray the Prayer of Entrustment of the MPHM.

Pray the Prayer of Entrustment of the MPHM every day and introduce all its requirements into your marital life. You should also arrange your daily activities so that prayer will always occupy the first place. Take care not to allow television and the internet to become thieves of your time at the cost of prayer and rest. Pray daily for the gift of a pure heart so as always to remain in a state of sanctifying grace. And if you fall into mortal sin, go immediately to confession.
