Black or African American English recording project: Job 00054247
Source language(s): English
Target language(s): English
Details of the project: Thank you for taking part in this data collection and helping build fairer AI. This project is to make technology fairer for people from different backgrounds. For example, speech recognition technology is currently more accurate for some people than for others. This project aims to address this disparity so that the technology can serve all users well, with a particular focus on collecting speech samples from people in different Black and African American communities.
It is important to keep in mind that people of Black and African American ancestry do not all speak the same way. There are regional differences, social class differences, urban vs. rural differences, and differences between younger and older speakers, to name a few. Our goal is to include as many of these varieties as possible to improve AI.
As a local contact, you will help drive speaker recruitment and data collection via an app. It is crucial that this collection proceed with care, understanding, and respect for participating speakers. As a local contact, this requires that you understand how to help participants feel comfortable using their most casual voices to avoid code switching, are prepared to answer questions about the collection, share concerns from participants with project organizers, and are familiar with the complex racial history that makes this such a sensitive and important collection.
Please ask for help anytime you are unsure how to proceed, need help with phrasing sensitive communications, or have any concerns.

The way of participation:
1. Confirm if speaker grew up from target city and can speak in local accent.
