Sample text (50 to 200 words): Symptoms and management of charcoal rot disease and Stem Borer (Insect) of Maize
• The characteristic symptoms of the disease appear after flowering.
• Plants show evidence of pre-mature ripening.
• The out sides of lower internodes become straw coloured.
• The pith becomes badly disintegrated.
• The infected stalks may split longitudinally into a mass of fibers.
• A distinguishing character of the disease is the presence of the small black sclerotia in the pith of the affected stalks.
•Roots are also invaded and show black sclerotia in the disorganized tissue.
• Whorl feeding of Sesemia inferens larvae results in rows of oblong holes in unfolding leaves unlike round shot holes produced by Chilo partellus.
• The larvae also form circular or “S” shaped tunnels filled with excreta inside the stem and also show exit holes on the surface.
• Larvae are found feeding on immature cobs, silks and tassel and severe infestation result in stunted plant growth and appearance of cob and tassel at one place.
• Please do Seed treatment with Admire (imidacloprid 70 WS) 10 g/kg of seeds.
• Soil application of phorate 10%CG 10 kg/ha at the time of sowing should be done.
• Total number of shoots and cobs damaged and number of larvae on individual plants should be counted.
• After a severe outbreak, stubble should be ploughed into the soil or burnt to kill any remaining larvae.
