Forum for Translators: Low Payer Thread
I recognize that the purpose of the blacklist is to identify non-payers/scammers, but I think we should also start calling out low payers.
I recognize that some agencies offer a budget service, and translators are free to choose to be underpaid if they wish. However, I think we should resist companies that offer translators offensively low rates in comparison to what they appear to charge clients.
I will start with one that I have encountered.
---------
Company name: TransnPack Inc. (https://www.transnpack.com/)
My pair is Japanese to English. On their site, you can find a package that includes English-to-Japanese translation, priced at $200 USD for 1000 words. I warned them that I would be reporting them, so in case they hide this information in response, I'm including a screenshot.
Japanese to English tends to be a bit more expensive than the reverse, so accounting for word-to-character compression (about 2.25 characters per word), my guess is that their reverse rate is around $0.10 USD/character (I wasn't able to find it on the site.)
In their e-mail, they told me that, quote,
"Our rates have been increased recently for Japanese to English pair.
We are offering the following rates:
0.027 USD/character for Human Translation & 0.023 USD/character for MTPE."
Even if they charge as little as $0.08 USD/character (I doubt it), this would constitute a 66% skim off of what they pay their translators for manual translation.
Now they are offering En_Ru translations for as low as 0.015 USD per word! While at their site they charge their customers USD 0.18 per word. Unbelievable.
0.015 USD per word is too cheap even for Russia. I wonder what they expect for the pay?
