Offline translator app with Cantonese support — looking for feedback

Offline translator app with Cantonese support — looking for feedback
Sender: Skyako (Traverba) 11-06-2026 02:56

Hi everyone,

I'm a developer from Hong Kong and I recently built a translator app called Traverba. I'd love to get feedback from people who use multiple languages daily.

A bit of background: my mother speaks Cantonese and our domestic helper speaks Tagalog. They couldn't find a translator that handled real conversation well, especially without internet. That's what pushed me to build this.

What makes it different from Google Translate or DeepL:

- It works completely offline. Voice, camera, screen, text — nothing needs an internet connection. Useful for travel, but also for everyday situations where WiFi is unreliable.

- Cantonese is treated as its own language, not a variant of Mandarin. Most translators file it under "Chinese (Traditional)" and give you Mandarin output. Anyone who speaks Cantonese knows the grammar, vocabulary, and expressions are quite different.

- Bluetooth conversation mode. Two or more phones connect over Bluetooth and translate a live conversation in real-time. Each phone handles the processing locally. No WiFi or hotspot needed.

- 140+ languages supported.

What I'd specifically love feedback on from this community:

1. For those of you who work with multiple languages daily — what do current translator apps get wrong? What frustrates you most?

2. Are there language pairs where you find machine translation particularly poor? I'd like to know which ones to prioritize improving.

3. For Cantonese speakers — does treating Cantonese as a separate language (rather than a Chinese dialect) match how you think about it? I've made this a core design decision but I'm curious how others see it.

4. Any languages or scripts where offline OCR (camera pointing at text) would be especially useful? I'm thinking menus, signs, handwritten notes, medicine labels.

The app is free to download with no signup needed: https://www.traverba.com

I'm not here to spam — genuinely interested in what language-focused people think. Happy to answer any questions about how the translation works under the hood.

Thanks for reading.
