Sender: Ala 24-04-2014 20:07

Dear colleagues,

I kindly ask you to complete the following questionnaire for research in translation studies. The questionnaire is quite long, therefore, if you lack time, please answer at least the first 9 questions briefly. You may send your answers to my e-mail alla_tolos@yahoo.com

I will be very grateful for your answers and I hope my research will bring great benefits to the development of our occupation!

Required questions:

What is (are) you native language(s)? What is the country of your permanent residence (official or no)?
How many years of work experience in translation field do you have?
Do you translate EU documents? If yes, please indicate the percentage of this type of documents in relation to your overall workload.
If you translate EU documents, do you translate them only into your native language (if no, please elaborate)?
Which is the most popular language pair or pairs you work with?
Do you complete revision or proof-reading tasks? If yes, please indicate the percentage of this type of tasks in relation to your overall workload. Do you think any translator can also be a reviser/proof-reader?
Do you translate texts of any field or do you specialise in particular fields?
Is translation work your only work-related income? If no, please indicate the percentage of your income from translation work in relation to your overall work-related income.
If you translate EU texts, is your translation rate for these documents higher in comparison with non-EU texts? If so, please indicate the difference in percent.
Optional questions:

How many hours does your usual working week has?
Do you work on weekends? If yes, do you charge extra for work in weekends? Would you prefer to have your weekends free and work only on workdays?
Have you ever worked (or currently work) as an in-house translator? If yes, please compare your experience when working as a freelance translator and as an in-house translator.
Do you work only with companies from other countries as well? If yes, please indicate which are these countries and how did you start working with companies from other countries?
Are you satisfied with your income from translation work?
What is your educational background? (philology, linguistics, translation studies, engineering, economics, etc.)
Have you ever completed any additional translation-related courses or participated in conferences/seminars/symposiums/internships in this field? If you have, was any such activity funded (travel expenses, accommodation, etc.) by a company you work for?
Do you enjoy your work? If your answer is no, what is the reason you work in this field? If yes, please list your most favourite aspects of this work.
If you had an opportunity, would you go to work as a translator (or interpreter) on a permanent basis to any of the European Union institutes in Brussels or Luxembourg? If yes, why does this opportunity attract you?
Please list advantages and drawbacks of working as a freelance translator that you experienced.
Feel free to write your personal experience on any translation-related matter not listed herein. Your opinion is very important and will be included in the research work.

Best wishes,

Ala
