Cos’è una schiuma metallica
Spesso nel linguaggio comune si utilizza il termine schiuma
metallica come sinonimo di materiale metallico poroso, riferendosi
a una qualsiasi massa metallica contenente una percentuale
non trascurabile di porosità, indipendentemente da
come esse siano state ottenute.
Tale definizione non è corretta e confonde di fatto le schiume
metalliche e le spugne metalliche, due tipi di materiale che vale
la pena di descrivere separatamente poiché hanno caratteristiche
fisiche e meccaniche decisamente diverse e differenti
campi di applicazione.
Schiume metalliche
A rigore con il termine schiuma si intende una dispersione, più
o meno uniforme, di una fase gassosa all’interno di una liquida.
Volendo quindi dare una definizione del tutto rigorosa di
schiuma metallica si può dire che si tratta di una dispersione
uniforme di un gas all’interno di una matrice metallica ottenuta
solidificando una schiuma formata dal metallo allo stato
liquido. Si tratta cioè di un materiale che si ottiene
solidificando
una massa composta da bolle di metallo liquido e quindi la
sua struttura non può che essere “a cella chiusa”, cioè le
porosità
presenti non sono interconnesse tra loro ma sono separate
da pareti più o meno sottili di metallo [3]. In commercio sono
reperibili schiume realizzate in alluminio, zinco e piombo, ma in
laboratorio sono state ottenute anche schiume in magnesio,
stagno, ottone e anche oro, sebbene per il momento queste
ultime siano da considerarsi per applicazioni di ricerca. La
percentuale
di porosità ottenibile all’interno di una schiuma metallica
è compresa tra 60% e 97% circa, a seconda del particolare
processo di produzione utilizzato. I costi, in particolare per
quanto riguarda l’alluminio, sono abbastanza contenuti.
Spugne metalliche
Si tratta di materiali a cella aperta, le porosità del materiale
sono cioè interconnesse. Vengono realizzate con processi
estremamente particolari che non partono da una schiuma
liquida e quindi possono impiegare una gamma più ampia di
materiali, è infatti possibile ottenere spugne di rame, acciaio
al carbonio, acciaio inossidabile, bronzo e nikel oltre che di
alluminio e zinco in una gamma di porosità compresa tra il
20% e il 97%.
