Since the world has a right to the truth, the organs of mass communication have a special responsibility to bear witness to it. Servant of God John Paul II reminded us that, “outside of the truth, freedom is not freedom. It is a semblance of freedom. In fact, it is enslavement” (Homily, June 6, 1991). Many media agencies are waging a relentless campaign of disinformation and hate against the Catholic Church. We are all witnesses to it.
John Paul II observed that since the communications media represent “an enhanced form of human speech, which either testifies to the truth or the contrary,” they bear a special responsibility for the message they convey. Alas, all too often the news is “prepared and transmitted in such a way as to give the impression of being good. This is called manipulation.” The Holy Father went on to say that, “there are various ways of maligning human beings, sometimes through whispered propaganda, sometimes quite openly. Then there is outright slander, i.e. speaking ill and falsely about someone. This is a peculiar form of destroying the truth, a peculiar form of transgressing the Eighth Commandment” (Homily, June 6, 1991).
These same media agencies that vilify the Catholic Church are engaged in a mass action of moral corruption. They are responsible for the constant undermining of the Ten Commandments by their rejection of every moral norm in the area of human sexuality, by their promotion of abortion, euthanasia, in vitro fertilization, divorce, and pornography. As believers, our attitude to these media must be unambiguous. We must not allow ourselves to be manipulated. So let us not buy or read their newspapers and websites. Let us not listen to their radio broadcasts. Let us not watch their TV stations. Let us instead turn to trusted news outlets, which strengthen us in the truth, in morality, and in the Faith.
Dear Readers! We strongly urge you to persevere in daily prayer, that you may not be discouraged, but rather place your trust in the Divine Mercy. Confide yourselves to Jesus every day through Mary. Pick yourselves up at once from every serious sin by making a sacramental confession and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. Only then will we partake in Christ’s victory over every manner of evil. Only then will this victory of His — through our mediation — be made present in our families and the world at large.
Be witnesses of Christ and evangelize others by securing new readers of Love One Another. For this purpose we will gladly send you additional copies of our magazine. Our Blessed Mother entreats you to send LOA your testimonies of graces and healings received, of conversions gained. Every day we pray a rosary and chaplet of divine mercy and every Friday offer up a Holy Mass for the intentions of our readers. Christ’s blessings!
