Bleed

Printing elements of business cards that extend beyond the edge of the card. The bleed provides a safe margin of error for eliminating white lines where the design meets the edge of your business card.

Blind Embossing

When an image is pressed into a sheet without ink or foil.

Business Card Design

The arrangement of graphical elements on a business card. See Business Card Template.

Business Card Template

A pre-developed business card layout which is used to make arrange and style elements on the business card. See also Business Card Design.

Card Stock

Refers to the paper thickness of the business cards.

CMYK

A type of colour profile that stands for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.

Dimensions

The international standard is 3.370" x 2.125" (85.60 x 53.98 mm), which is the size of a credit card. Size standards in different countries vary.

Double Sided Business Cards

Business cards with text or images printed on both sides of the cards.

Embossing

Pressing image, foils or ink into card stock.

Four Colour Process

Combining four basic colours to create a printed colour picture. Also refers to combining 4 basic colours to create other colours.

Four Over Four

Refers to full colour business card printing.

Four Over Zero

Refers to full colour business card printing.

Free Business Cards

Business cards provided without payment. Usually offered as an example of the printing company's quality before a purchasing in bulk.

Glossy Finish

Most business cards are finished with a coating to enhance the look and durability of the business cards. See UV Coating.

Proofing

Reviewing the card design before it is sent to the printing press.

Raised Print

Achieved by using a process called thermography where plastic powder is sprinkled on top of wet ink. This is an optional feature found on some business cards.

RGB Colour

A type of colour profile that stands for red, green, and blue.

Single Sided Business Cards

Business cards with text or images printed on only one side of the card.

UV Coating

Environmentally friendly liquid laminate that is bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. See Glossy Finish.

Watermark

A design created in paper that can be easily seen by holding the paper up to a light. An optional feature found on some single sided business cards.
