Forum for Translators: Beginner, please spare advice and help if you can :)
Hello everybody,
my name is Elena and I live in the (currently freezing) South West of the UK, where I moved from Italy about 10 yrs ago.
I work as a supply teacher at a primary school, and for a number of reasons that I won't bore you with, I need to make some changes in my life. I would love to use my expertise in my native language (IT) and my second language to make a start as a translator.
I have a degree in Psychology obtained here in the UK but lack any translation-related qualifications.
I am finding it so tricky to make this start that I thought I ought to ask for help. How can I gain experience, how can I apply for jobs when the vast majority of them require experience?
Do you know of any companies who are willing to help beginners out, even with some unpaid work?
I don't use any 'tools' as I haven't tackled any professional translations yet, is there anything essential I should look at getting?
Many many thanks for reading this, I hope I haven't wasted too much of your time.
Elena
Dear Elena,
I began my career as a full time translator 11 years ago. When i first graduated, i had no experience, so I took exams held by gov to get translator's certificate. Once i got proper level of such documents, I got a job in no time.
now I work for https://www.globibo.com/, as a translator and often perform other tasks.
