Forum for Translators: Bocott Job#34100 Hindi post editing huge volume online job
Hi
I am a freelance Hindi translator and recently I saw an ad post on this site which calls for Hindi translators to do an online editing job.
Let me inform you about this job. Marvel comics is hiring translators worldwide for translating their comics (Archies, Spiderman etc) into Hindi and other languages. The job involves rectifying Google translated stuff. You will need to log on to an Online platform for and do the translation.
Challenges of This Job
1. The mchine translation are almost worthless, you will be required to put effort as if you were to do the job from scratch.
2. The online job includes loading of heavy PNG images and depending on your net connection, it is a time consuming stuff.
3. If you are selected to do the job, you will be asked to maintain sentence length similar to that of English because your text has to fit in the comic book boxes.
4. You cannot do straight forward translation because, it’s a comic book. You will need to maintain, humor, wit and mood which will take a lot of thinking and, time too.
5. You cannot used Trados or anything CAT tool, unless you decide to copy paste from one interface to the other.
Recently I was hired by a translation agency for the said job and completed a pilot phase. The job was appreciated and I was paid well. But it seems that Marvel is still in the lookout for cheaper bargains, and now I see an Indian agency offering Rs. 550 per book for this laborious work. They are asking you to do a minimum of 5 books, this is because Marvel will do a paid test translation of five books. I have worked on this project and my experience is that even with broadband, each book requires 10 hours of work. Rs 550 is nothing but an insult to the translator. This is not even one fourth of the amount Marvel is paying to the agencies.
My request to all translators:
PLEASE BLACK OUT THIS JOB POSTER. DO NOT BID ON THIS PROJECT. Learn to respect your dignity. Freelance is an unregulated business sector in India and these shameless agencies are exploiting translators worse than middle age feudal lords. You will probably earn more if you work in your neighborhood cleaning utensils and sweeping floors. Translation is an intellectual work and Rs 550 for 8 hours of work is anything but sub-human. It doesn’t respect human dignity. I am alerting you. Don’t fall into this trap.
