APROTRAD - Association Professionnelle Des Métiers De La Traduction
APROTRAD was founded in December 1993 by a group of translators working in the Loire Valley of central France. Our aims were, and still are,
One of our main functions is to instruct members in new developments in the field of translation; this we do by means of training sessions, usually on Saturdays. Such sessions, about four each year, can cover any subject relevant to our profession, such as typography, marketing, terminology, legal aspects, financial and fiscal pitfalls, new software packages, computer threats, etc. In fact, since about a year we are an officially recognized French training organization. Several of our members lecture in translation schools attached to the universities of Angers, Orléans and Paris. In addition, we have a very active chat room, accessible only to members, where animated discussions take place concerning the finer points of translating or the elucidation of obscure expressions; literally every day sees a lively discussion along these lines. Over the past years, APROTRAD has been a very active participant in discussions concerning the European standardization of translation services, which in France are steered by AFNOR, the French standardization organization. In earlier years, much effort was put into setting up professional statutes French for translators in France, as ours was one of the few professions not regulated by such statutes; however, diverging viewpoints in the various professional sectors, such as agencies versus individuals, precluded a successful completion of this work If you would like to join us,
