APROTRAD was founded
in December 1993 by a group of translators working
in the Loire Valley of central France. Our aims were,
and still are,
- To foster dialogue between
colleagues who commonly work in relative isolation,
- To instruct high-school and university
students in the best ways to access the professions
of translator and interpreter,
- To give the general public and
clients a true perception of our profession, and
- To work towards official and legal
recognition of our profession at French and European
levels.
Since its creation, APROTRAD
has attracted members from all over France, though over
half still reside in the Centre region, our administrative
headquarters being located in Orléans. Members are self-employed
and salaried, and work in all imaginable fields, covering
most European languages.
One of our main
functions is to instruct members in new developments
in the field of translation; this we do by means of
training sessions, usually on Saturdays. Such sessions,
about four each year, can cover any subject relevant
to our profession, such as typography, marketing,
terminology, legal aspects, financial and fiscal pitfalls,
new software packages, computer threats, etc. In fact,
since about a year we are an officially recognized
French training organization.
Several of our
members lecture in translation schools attached to
the universities of Angers, Orléans and Paris.
In addition,
we have a very active chat room, accessible only to
members, where animated discussions take place concerning
the finer points of translating or the elucidation
of obscure expressions; literally every day
sees a lively discussion along these lines.
Over the past
years, APROTRAD has been a very active participant
in discussions concerning the European standardization
of translation services, which in France are steered
by AFNOR, the French standardization organization.
In earlier years, much effort was put into setting
up professional statutes French for translators in
France, as ours was one of the few professions not
regulated by such statutes; however, diverging viewpoints
in the various professional sectors, such as agencies
versus individuals, precluded a successful completion
of this work
